Here are some frequently asked questions about our Intensive Study Dance Program.

Who Should Audition?

  • those interested in a more challenging and demanding track of dance classes
  • you do not need to be ‘invited’ - if you have the desire, you should come to the audition!!

What do we look for?

  • skill
  • future potential
  • passion, dedication, positivity and willingness to learn

How are students placed in their level?

  • classes are place by skill level, not by age (our recreational program is placed by age)

If a student auditions but is not at a level to be accepted yet, we will suggest a course path that will help them toward their dance goals and better prepare them for the audition next year.

What else is required of students?

  • All of the Intensive Study classes have prerequisite classes (This means required classes that build strength, technique, and will help you flourish as a dancer)
  • We also have an attendance policy that we strictly adhere to

Class Class Prerequisites
Intensive Study Jazz Level A-D 2 Ballet Classes
1 Conditioning Class
Intensive Study Tap Level A-D 1 Conditioning class
1 Jazz and/or  2 ballet classes
Intensive Study Contemporary 2 ballet classes

NEW!!! Advanced Level Program

*this will take the place of Advanced Jazz and Advanced Contemporary, the program is now combined.

1 Advanced choreography class

1 conditioning class

If the dancer is on Company, a solo (any style) will be required.

See the list of requirements for Advanced here.

Is my child required to compete in Dance Competitions? (click here to read more about our Dance Company)

  • Intensive Study Dancers are not required to participate in dance competitions (although many do)
  • Our full-time Dance Company is solely comprised of our intensive study dancers
  • The auditions for Intensive Study and Company are the same.  You will indicate on your audition form if you are interested in being considered for Company as well.

What is the Cost?

  • The cost per class for Intensive Study classes is the same as recreational classes. (Classes at GLDA are charged by the length of the class, not by the level of the class.)
  • However, you must take the required amount of classes.
  • You may choose which disciplines of dance you would like to audition for. Almost all require that students take ballet twice a week and participate in ballet exams.

What is the Time Commitment?

  • Minimum: 3 days a week
  • Max: 5 days a week
